The Vista Las Palmas neighborhood, which began construction circa 1958, achieved immediate cachet by being built just to the west of one of Palm Springs’ most classic neighborhoods, known today as “Old Las Palmas.”  Architecturally, Vista Las Palmas is mixed and boasts a unique collection of roughly 375 homes.

Vista Las Palmas consists of predominately mid-century modern homes such as the designs of architects William Krisel and Charles Dubois, built by the Alexander Construction Co. Krisel’s designs are rectangular and open, with a breezeway separating the carport from the living area. He also popularized the “butterfly” roof, where two panels meet in the middle of the roofline and slope upward and outward, like open butterfly wings.

The butterfly roof became Krisel’s SoCal design trademark although it was originally designed by Swiss-French architect and Modernist pioneer Le Corbusier. Charles Dubois designs are double, single-story homes, known as “Swiss Miss,” fronted by large, two-story A-frame-eaves, shingled roofs, and 18-foot walls of glass offering dramatic views.

Since the late 1990s, many of the homes in Vista Las Palmas CA have been artfully remodeled, some back to their original splendor in great detail, or modernized with upgrades in keeping with the style.  Realtor and remodeler extraordinaire Mark Anton has restored 11 houses in the neighborhood since 1997.  And “Whatever I’ve done,” he says, “has been in character with the house.”

People knew Vista Las Palmas had returned at the start of 2003 when Anton sold the first home for $1 million in the neighborhood.  Vista Las Palmas has become a symbol of Mid-century modern architecture and most homes for sale in Vista Las Palmas are priced from one million to over 3 million.
